Trademark?
Hello. Someone passed along a message about "Jesuit" being trademarked. I checked the Web site mentioned, and there is no indication of a trademark. Furthermore, I seriously doubt that a trademark would be allowed for a proper noun that has been in existence for centuries. So, I question the legitimacy of the claim. Do you have reasons to believe it?
If you really want to change the domain name, that's a different matter, go ahead and make the request. But I would not do it without a better reason. I'm not a lawyer, but I know that trademarks need to be identified by the organization that wants to keep it, and the Web site mentioned does not. And it sounds a bit like a hoax to me.

- Thank you for your posting. There is a trademark on the word "Jesuit" that is owned by the Jesuit Conference. You can find this trademark information by searching the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's online database. It is my understanding that the Jesuits are trying to systematically communicate which institutions and activities they officially sponsor vs. those which are related to them but are not officially sponsored by them. I have been in discussions with Father Smolich, President of the Jesuit Conference, since April 2006 about this wiki. A communications committee of the Jesuit Conference decided in October 2006 that they do not want to officially sponsor this wiki and asked that a different name be used to make it clear the wiki is a lay led initiative. The term "Ignatian" (an adjective based on Ignatius, the founder of the Society of Jesus) has frequently been used for lay led initiatives that are related to the Jesuits and/or based on Ignatian spirituality but are not Jesuit sponsored . Based on discussions I have had with a number of lay Catholics who work at Jesuit universities, I have chosen to change the name of the wiki to the "Ignatian wiki". The Jesuits do not have a trademark on this term and Father Smolich and the communications committee of the Jesuit Conference discussed this name and said it was OK to use it. Macedonian and Aromanian Ignatian Wiki
Hello, if possible I would like to start and administer (if possible) a Macedonian and Aromanian language version of the Ignatian Wiki. I believe that it would be a great help to the Macedonian and Aromanian Catholic community and expand this wiki in these nations. Thank you very much and God bless!
